Applegate LLC is a communication consultancy specializing in design, research, writing, and editing.
Communication is the heart of everything John does. After many years editing books and magazines, he switched to designing and researching websites for Fortune 500 companies.
So it came naturally to design a print and digital language Cheat Sheet to help people communicate.
No, he doesn’t speak French – or any of the other languages to follow in the “Traveler’s [language] Cheat Sheet” series: Italian, German, and Spanish. His part is to design the optimum template into which language information can be poured. As the series editor and ringmaster, he curates the vocabulary to include and brings in translators, developers, testers, and other experts like the people below to do what they do best. More about John.
A partner in Applegate LLC, Michael has 27 patents and 14 books on computer technology under his belt. He was Head of Innovation and Technology at HP and Director of Product Management at McAfee.
He is also an entrepreneur and a versatile writer, winner of the Readers’ Favorite International Book Award and author of an award-winning play, Scary, Scary Night. His books for kids include Sometimes I Get My Shoes on Backwards and Derek Knows Spooky When He Sees It, the first in the three-book Derek Hyde series. More about Michael.
Charline is a native French-speaking copyeditor, proofreader, and English-to-French translator in southern France. Her expertise is making sure text for French-speakers sounds authentically French. She holds a Certificat Voltaire, the only French certificate that vouches for one’s mastery of spelling and idiomatic French expression without typos or grammatical errors. She was also the phrasebook’s advisor on all things French. More about Charline.
Andrea is a conference interpreter and ATA-certified French-to-English translator. She wrote all of the phonetic spellings and helped research the best way to present the phonetics. She holds a Masters in French Translation and Interpretation from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. More about Andrea.
Gisele was born and raised in France. She earned a Master’s in French/English comparative literature at UC Berkeley. She has taught both French and translation at the University of San Francisco and at the Alliance Française. Certified as a translator by the Consulate General of France in San Francisco, she translated certain key additions to Traveler’s French Cheat Sheet.
As a British–American copyeditor, Jinny made sure the phrasebook included all the needed British terms. She edits mostly academic work, including essays, dissertations, theses, and manuscripts for journals. She studied at The Publishing Training Centre, the UK’s pre-eminent training body for proofreading and related disciplines. More about Jinny.
